Recently released reports indicate that Papua New Guinea earns 128.8 million US dollars or over four hundred million kina annually in license fees from tuna alone. Pacific Islands News Agency (PINA) President and National Broadcasting Corporation Managing Director Kora Nou when addressing a media workshop on fisheries today in Port Moresby says this represents four point nine percent of the Government's revenue. Mr. Nou says the 2019 Tuna Fishery Card presented to Pacific leaders in Tuvalu last month show that license and access fees were at an all time high in the Region, surpassing 500 million US dollars or over one billion kina in 2018 and providing around 22-500 jobs in 2017 - from only 7000 in 2013. Meantime, National Fisheries Authority Managing Director John Kasu says PNG is fortunate to have other renewable and non-renewable resources that can be turned to, to generate revenue unlike other Pacific island countries who rely solely on fisheries. Kasu says as such the fisheries sector is a very important revenue earner for these countries. He was speaking at the opening of the three day Tuna Forum Media training workshop today in Port Moresby, where he highlighted the important role the media plays in the dissemination of information on Fisheries. The three day workshop which ends on Wednesday 11th September is a precursor to the 7th Pacific Tuna Forum to be held from the 12th-13th September 2019 in Port Moresby.
