Australian Attorney General and PNG Foreign Minister Witness Police Training Demonstration18/6/2024
Australian Attorney General Hon. Mark Dreyfus and PNG Foreign Minister Justin Tkatchenko were given a walkthrough brief on the ongoing Australian Federal Police (AFP) and Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary (RPNGC) policing training and methods. The brief included a live and simulated demonstration of police action. The Australian Federal Police provides continuous support to the RPNGC's training and development through the Papua New Guinea-Australia Policing Partnership (PNG-APP), established in 2008 and extended under the Bilateral Security Agreement (BSA) signed in 2023. Initially deploying 17 AFP members, the program currently involves 43 AFP members who mentor and build capabilities within the RPNGC. Minister Tkatchenko emphasized the importance of the partnership, stating, “The Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary (RPNGC) and the Australian Federal Police (AFP) have a deep and trusted police-to-police partnership that reflects Papua New Guinea's and Australia’s status as close neighbours with shared values and mutual security interests.”
The PNG-APP program is designed to support the RPNGC in delivering effective policing services to communities. Through the provision of advisors and enhanced capabilities, the program aims to improve investigation processes targeting serious and organized crime. It also offers training and operational support to the RPNGC, helping it address the evolving and complex global criminal environment. Also read Comments are closed.
