The Bishop of Chimbu has strongly condemned the recent killing of a priest in the province. Bishop Paul Sundu of the Kundiawa Diocese described the murder of Fr Moses Gende of the Gogme parish as a “heinous act” that has sent shockwaves through the community and beyond. “This despicable crime is not just an attack on one individual or one faith. It is an assault on the very fabric of humanity and our shared values of peace, compassion, and respect for all life,” Bishop Sundu stated. He emphasized that the murder of a priest, who symbolizes faith, guidance, and selfless service, is a direct affront to the principles of love and forgiveness central to all religious teachings. Bishop Sundu lamented the cruel and senseless nature of the act, which he said defies comprehension and serves only to sow fear, division, and despair. “We must stand together in unequivocal condemnation of this barbaric act. We must demand justice for the victim, accountability for the perpetrators, and take a decisive stand against all forms of violence, intolerance, and hatred in our society,” he urged.
Calling for collective action, Bishop Sundu stressed the importance of promoting understanding and dialogue to build a more peaceful and harmonious society. “It is incumbent upon each and every one of us to speak out against such atrocities, to promote understanding and dialogue, and to work towards building a more peaceful and harmonious society for all,” he said. He encouraged the community not to let the darkness of hatred and violence overshadow the light of compassion and empathy. In his statement, Bishop Sundu called on the community to honor Fr Moses Gende’s memory by upholding values of love, tolerance, and respect for all life. “As we mourn the loss of a beloved priest, let us also recommit ourselves to upholding the values of love, tolerance, and respect for all life. Let us honor the memory of the slain priest, Fr Moses, by striving to create a world where such senseless violence has no place, and where all individuals can live in safety, dignity, and peace,” he stated. The murder of Fr Moses Gende, which occurred last week along the Kundiawa-Gembogl road as he was returning to his St Peter’s and Paul’s parish in Gogme, serves as a tragic reminder of the fragility of life and the urgent need for unity, understanding, and solidarity in the face of senseless violence.
