![]() Former Papua New Guinea Prime Minister and Member for Ialibu Pangia, Honourable Peter O’Neill when asked about the leadership rumours surrounding James Marape commented: “Making grand promises might make you friends at the time and give you the feeling of popularity but unless you turn the promises into clear plans and deliver, the friends you gained with the hollow promises will turn into enemies.” “The grand statements were not said with genuine intent. They were spoken with a forked tongue and have now come back to bite with both fangs,” said Mr. O’Neill. “It is little wonder we are hearing constant talk of a lack of trust in Marape’s leadership from within his own camp.” Mr. O’Neill went on, “In April 2020, Marape cancelled the State Mining Lease of Porgera at the height of gold prices, crippling Enga and the National economy. He has promised it would open I don’t know how many times now – 2021, 2022 and now 2023 and still the mine is closed.” “He promised a grand reopening on Independence Day this year and instead chose to hide away and not even front our people on our most important day. The flag flew at half-mast in a nod to the sad situation we have been led into.” “According to many, Marape has promised the landowners of the Hides Gas Power Plant in Hela that he would make sure it was gifted to them. As late as August this year he gathered them together and announced in a media statement they would have their own Porgera Development Forum in Hela to ensure their demands were met.” “Since then, absolutely nothing for the Hela landowners.” “People are understandably tired of these constant Marape Promises.” “He promised he wouldn’t borrow but make PNG the richest, black Christian Nation with no child left behind. Instead, he has delivered a doubling of debt to now 60 billion Kina accompanied by an IMF rescue package and devaluation of our Kina,” stated the former Prime Minister. Statements when he came to office that he would stop all expensive international travel have instead translated to _“I will lead the most wasteful Government in PNG’s history and jet set around the world"_ burning up taxpayers’ money and ruining the ozone layer at the same time as he talks about climate change. It is just all talk,” said the Leader of the People’s National Congress Party. “The disease Marape has of making promises with no intention of keeping them has caused the symptoms we are now seeing play out with high levels of distrust within his own camp.” “The people of our country are suffering from a cost-of-living crisis and businesses are put in impossible situations with no foreign currency to come by and a lack of confidence in the economic management of our nation. However, instead of addressing the public about how he is going to fix these issues he instead has got very good at telling us where he is jetting off to next.” “There are capable Members of Parliament on both sides of the house who are very concerned about the lack of credibility of this Prime Minister. The very pride of our nation has been repeatedly put at risk and we all feel a certain amount of shame that we have turned into a nation where our CEO cares nothing about whether his words are factual but only about clinging on to power for his own sake.” “He has dragged his own reputation into disrepute as a man who cannot be trusted and now seems that there are a good number of his government - good and honourable members of Parliament, are fed up with his promise everything and deliver nothing style of leadership.” “Marape will make us the poorest, Christian Nation on Earth and appears well on course to delivering to himself and a few close cronies the riches,” concluded Mr. O’Neill.
