Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea - Edward Bero, First Assistant Secretary of the ICT Division at the Department of Finance, commended the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) for its pivotal role in propelling digital transformation across the government. Bero's remarks came during the two-day Data Governance Workshop held at the Holiday Inn from June 4 to 5, 2024. Bero praised DICT for spearheading the digital transformation agenda, particularly highlighting the evolving significance of data governance, which was not a focal point six years ago but has now become critical to governmental operations. He stressed the necessity for collaboration among government sectors and the private sector to advance this agenda, emphasizing the integral role accurate data plays in operational efficiency and transparency.
The Finance Department heavily relies on accurate data, notably through systems like the ALESCO Payroll system and the Integrated Financial Management System (IFMS). Bero underscored the widespread deployment of IFMS across all districts in PNG, emphasizing its role in promoting transparency. He emphasized the importance of data security, accuracy, and availability, outlining challenges faced by the Finance Department in data governance, including cybersecurity issues, power outages, and fuel shortages. Additionally, he highlighted the need for an improved public service remuneration structure to retain valuable human capital. Photo by DICT Also read Comments are closed.
