![]() Former PNG Prime Minister and Member for Ialibu-Pangia Peter O'Neill appeared before the Waigani Committal Court for the first time this morning following his arrest last month. Mr O'Neill aged 55 from Kauwo village in Southern Highlands Province is facing a count each of misappropriation and abuse of office under the Criminal Code Act. The allegations leveled against Mr O'Neill arise from payments made to an Israeli company LR Group Limited for the purchase of two turbine diesel generators when Mr O'Neill was the Prime Minister then. Police alleged that on December 4, 2013, Mr O'Neill unlawfully directed procurement of K50m of public funds belonging to the State that was paid on December 18 the same year to the benefit of a foreign Israeli company LR Group Ltd for the purported procurement and installation of two diesel turbine generators for Port Moresby and Lae. Police alleged that the money was procured and paid to LR Group without any contract properly procured and executed under the Public Finances Management Act 1995 and without seeking view approval from the National Executive Council. Mr O'Neill is currently out on a National Court bail of K5,000 with conditions. The case has been adjourned July 9 for further mention.
