Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea – Finschhafen MP Rainbo Paita has raised concerns over the ongoing fuel crisis, emphasizing its significant impact on the traveling public, businesses, and power generation across the country. "In the city or rural areas, whether you are employed or unemployed, it is impossible not to be impacted by the never-ending rolling fuel crisis," Paita said. He highlighted that the fuel shortage is not just a problem for Papua New Guinea but also a major deterrent to foreign and domestic investment. "It is common knowledge that potential investors are delaying or deciding against bringing much-needed jobs and investments to PNG because the Government cannot guarantee even the most basic of necessities – a reliable supply of fuel," he stated. Paita criticized the government’s approach to handling the crisis, urging Prime Minister James Marape to adopt practical solutions. "The Prime Minister needs to start listening to practical solutions instead of doing whatever strikes him at the moment he is confronted with an issue. A proactive approach needs to be taken instead of this reactionary make-shift temporary band-aid short-term solutions," he said.
He reminded the government that former petroleum minister Kerenga Kua had left a comprehensive plan in place before resigning, yet there has been minimal indication that this plan is being actioned. Paita commended Deputy Prime Minister John Rosso for his efforts in addressing the issue during the ongoing stalemate between Puma Energy and the Bank of Papua New Guinea (BPNG). "We need to follow the advice and appoint, under the Essential Services Act, an Independent Controller to find and implement both short-term and more sustainable solutions," Paita suggested. "This was a fuel crisis when it first happened, but it is now an embarrassing national disgrace. The daily inconvenience now affects the most basic of services." Paita concluded by urging the Prime Minister to face the reality of the situation. "The PM has to start facing the reality that his decisions or indecisions are now costing the country major problems and it’s time to bite the bullet," he said. ALso read Comments are closed.
