![]() The recent surge in criminal activities, including looting and burning in cities like Port Moresby and Lae, has been attributed to the adverse effects of high inflation and tax rates on people's livelihoods, as stated by the Papua New Guinea Trade Union Congress (TUC). Acting General Secretary of the TUC, Anton Sekum, condemned the destructive acts, revealing that incidents in Port Moresby, Lae, and Goroka had resulted in 24 reported deaths. Sekum emphasized the need for the government to address the root causes, urging the establishment of an independent team free from political affiliations to thoroughly investigate the situation.
Sekum criticized the National Security Council's recommendation for an administrative review, insisting on the necessity of eliminating doubts in the investigation findings. He further called for the consideration of wage subsidies for workers who lost their jobs during this challenging period. Highlighting concerns about the legislative process, Sekum expressed apprehension that leaders were rushing the passage of laws without sufficient due diligence, emphasizing the need for decisions that prioritize the long-term interests of the economy and the people. In particular, he criticized the swift passage of amendments to section 55 of the Central Banking Act, citing the 48-hour timeframe as alarmingly rapid and warranting attention across the Commonwealth. The TUC, in a statement, condemned biased political narratives on social media, specifically urging an end to spreading unsubstantiated claims against Police Association President Lowa Tambua. The union emphasized that any wrongdoing on Tambua's part would be established through formal government investigations. The statement further defended Tambua's intervention, asserting that it had prevented disgruntled police officers from causing direct mayhem. The TUC warned of catastrophic consequences if such actions were to occur, emphasizing the need for a balanced and evidence-based approach in addressing the complex challenges facing the nation.
