Port Moresby, July 2, 2024 – The National Capital District (NCD) has witnessed a rise in stolen motor vehicle (SMV) cases, according to recent police reports. NCD Metropolitan Superintendent Silva Sika confirmed that over three SMV cases are being reported weekly. Despite the increase, Superintendent Sika highlighted the successful recovery rate of these stolen vehicles, attributing it to the diligent efforts and local knowledge of the police officers. "With the good local knowledge from the police officers, they locate vehicles within hours," he stated. Superintendent Sika expressed his gratitude to the police force for their relentless efforts. "I want to thank the police officers who have worked tirelessly in recovering the stolen vehicles and returning them safely to the owners. I also want to make a special mention to the NCDC reservist units who are actively involved in policing duties in the city. I was pleased with one of their units who recovered two vehicles last week at two different locations in the city," he said.
One vehicle was recovered in Siraka, while the other was found in Hanuabada. The latter had a different plate number affixed, which was confirmed by the owner. Superintendent Sika also mentioned that other police units had recovered two stolen taxis in the city, along with several other vehicles. Most of the reported stolen vehicles were taxis and small cars, often taken at night. Superintendent Sika urged the public to report crimes promptly and accurately. "I am calling on the public moving in vehicles and those witnessing such crimes to report quickly to the police with accurate information so they will respond immediately. When dealing with such crimes, it's important to report it as soon as possible to the main operation center or any police officers you know. We all can help each other by reporting crimes that happen in our respective areas to the police," he added. Also read
