NCDC Partners with Women’s Micro Bank to Empower Unemployed Youths Through Entrepreneurship3/7/2024
The National Capital District Commission (NCDC) has announced a partnership with Women’s Micro Bank (Mama Bank) aimed at transforming unemployed youths into entrepreneurs through the Urban Youth Employment Project Two (UYEP2). Tim Gilis, the project coordination manager, stated that the US$35 million (approximately K134.4 million) funded by the World Bank for UYEP2 will provide life-skills training and business skills to young men and women, ensuring they can sustain their livelihoods. “The programme is the initiative of the Government with the loan funding from the World Bank,” Gilis said.
The announcement followed the signing of an agreement between the NCDC and Mama Bank in the National Capital District. This collaboration aims to empower small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) and enhance financial inclusion among youths. “This memorandum of understanding marks a significant step towards empowering SMEs and entrepreneurs,” Gilis added. He emphasized that the programme will include unemployed youths in Lae and Port Moresby. “Mama Bank has come on board to give opportunity to our youths to start their own businesses. About 6,700 young men and women in Port Moresby and Lae will be engaged in the UYEP2,” he said. “This programme provides capacity-building and life-skills training for our youths, and will give them financial empowerment. Since phase one of the project from 2017 to 2021, it has contributed to minimizing law and order issues in the city and encouraging youths to become better citizens.” Also read Comments are closed.
