Port Moresby, June 29, 2024 – The Leader of the Opposition in Papua New Guinea, Douglas Tomuriesa, has taken a decisive step by filing a Section 18 Supreme Court Reference. This legal move seeks the Court’s interpretation on issues surrounding the Connect PNG Program. Tomuriesa announced, "As the Leader of the Opposition, I have filed a case in the Supreme Court to review how the government is handling the funds for this program. It is our job to ensure that the government adheres to the laws of Papua New Guinea, particularly regarding the expenditure of public money." The primary concern, according to Tomuriesa, lies in the allocation and usage of funds earmarked for the Connect PNG Program. "We believe that a significant amount of money has not been transferred or utilized according to legal requirements. This includes K257 million in 2021, K628 million in 2022, K785 million in 2023, and K261 million in January 2024," he elaborated.
The Opposition is seeking to ensure that every kina of public money is spent legally and transparently. Tomuriesa emphasized the importance of this scrutiny for maintaining public trust in the government's financial management. "Our application seeks clarity from the Supreme Court on several constitutional sections related to the management of public funds. These sections are crucial for ensuring responsible use and accountability of government expenditures," Tomuriesa stated. By filing this case, the Opposition aims to safeguard the interests of the people of Papua New Guinea, ensuring that all government spending is conducted correctly and benefits everyone in the country. Tomuriesa reiterated the Opposition’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and proper use of public funds. He concluded by noting the significance of the case's progression, with the next hearing scheduled for July 2, 2024. Also read Comments are closed.
