![]() PAPUA New Guinea’s population is expected to reach more than 21 million by 2050, says National Statistics Office deputy statistician Hajily Kele. “It is projected that next year, the population will be more than 13 million, (then) 10 to 15 million in 2030, and 18.6 million in 2040,” she said. “By 2050, the national population projection is expected to reach 21.7 million.” She mentioned this during a presentation of the country’s 2024-2050 population projections yesterday, saying the numbers would continue to increase because of current population trendz such as the increasing fertility rate. Kele explained that the projections were based on past data and information collected around the country.
“Given the components of fertility, mortality and migration as the basis for the projections, the national and provincial population projections were made, with the district population projections yet to be determined,” she said. “A population projection is more a prospective exercise than a prediction. The component methods used for the population projections mainly include inputs of fertility, mortality and migration trends and the population model estimation made in 2021.” She added that the population projections would help the Government and other agencies in the planning and implementation of their work in the country. Meanwhile, National Statistician John Igitoi said the projections were done in response to the demand for more updated data. “Population data is the fundamental denominator of planning and decision-making for governments of all levels, institutions, development partners and other entities which strive to contribute to the development goals of our country. “Population projections are needed by the Government and general public to know what is likely to happen in the future, to know what to expect and, if possible, to anticipate demographic changes of importance to national development.” Statement/TheNational/PNGfacts Also read Comments are closed.
