PM Marape Calls New Pangu Candidates ' Men and Women of Substance': Names to be announced this week27/4/2022
![]() PNG PRIME Minister Hon. James Marape has today given his solid vote of confidence behind the 40-or-so candidates that his Pangu Pati is endorsing for the nearing National General Elections 2022, calling them “men and women of substance”. While the process of finalizing and releasing the names will be done tomorrow when the Party regroups for the second part of its convention, the bigger public gathering with Morobeans and those who flew in to join the convention ended on a high note early this evening at Lae’s Sir Ignatius Kilage Stadium. A list of speakers preceded in the event, with the Prime Minister providing the keynote toward the end of the gathering and giving a powerful speech on the history, strength and significance of the party that he has led since 2019. Prime Minister Marape spoke highly of the 40 current Pangu Members of Parliament, many of whom were in attendance at the public convention, saying they were men of high standing and integrity as witnessed in the Laguna and Loloata camps – the events that culminated in the formation of the current government. “These men took no bribery; they were focused on Taking Back PNG and putting it on the road to recovery and prosperity while delivering to our country the promise of Independence where we leave no child behind. I thank these leaders who stood by me – 40 of them,” said PM Marape.
He said the Party has so far fielded 40 or so new candidates, with the finalization to happen tomorrow when names will be released. Screening had been done a year ago. “I am satisfied with the level of candidates that we endorsed and the ones that we have picked through the process. “We were of the opinion that writs will be opened tomorrow and we timed our convention today to witness the nomination of our Governor and Deputy Party Leader. But elections are being deferred by two weeks. The Electoral Commission has the Constitutional mandate to call for when the writs are issued so long as they do not go past the fifth anniversary of the return of the last writs,” said PM Marape. The Prime Minister continued by telling the Pangu members of how the Pangu-led government had worked hard to stabilize the economy of the country in the face of three hard years beginning with a bad deficit economy, COVID-19 pandemic and now the war in Europe impacting on costs of living. He said his Government has done well putting in programs to support the people – such as Connect PNG to build roads into rural areas, the support of small businesses, programs to assist agriculture and the programs to help with tuition fees for Education. The Prime Minister was very confident of Pangu’s return to power after the elections. “Pangu has had no major controversy. We have come in three hard years and the people will give the mandate for Pangu to continue over the next five years.” He heartily thanked party officials and members who flew from throughout the country to Lae to join in the two-day convention.
