Papua New Guinea (PNG) stands poised to embrace transformative advancements in healthcare through the "Rays of Hope" program, spearheaded by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). This initiative aims to democratize access to radiation therapy for cancer treatment across the nation. In addition to healthcare, PNG anticipates collaboration with IAEA to extend into sectors such as agriculture and climate change. Addressing delegates at the 66th Annual Convention of the IAEA in Vienna, Health Minister Dr. Tom Lino highlighted PNG's commitment to expanding healthcare capabilities. "Our delegation, including Secretary Liko, Director General Nisit, Dr. Paki Molume of PMGH, Dr. Gua Tau, Dr. Peter Olali, and George Otto, convened to outline our national strategy," remarked Dr. Lino during his keynote address. "By the end of 2023, our goal is to establish a state-of-the-art Cancer Center at PMGH," Dr. Lino affirmed, emphasizing the need for specialized expertise and financial support. "The IAEA's partnership will be instrumental in realizing this vision, supporting our efforts across various technical and clinical domains."
Acknowledging the challenges ahead, Dr. Lino underscored the Marape-Rosso Government's steadfast commitment to healthcare development. "Through dedicated budgetary allocations and strategic partnerships like this, we are laying the foundation to alleviate the suffering of our people affected by cancer," he affirmed. The signing of the Country Program Framework 2022-2027 on Friday is slated to unlock substantial support from IAEA over the next five years. "While assistance may not yield immediate results, we are optimistic about the Rays of Hope that lie ahead," concluded Dr. Lino, expressing confidence in PNG's future healthcare landscape.
