Port Moresby, June 17, 2024 — The Papua New Guinea National Population Census has officially commenced today, with Prime Minister James Marape being the first citizen to be counted. In his address prior to the enumeration, Prime Minister Marape underscored the critical importance of the census, emphasizing that the collected data is vital for informed planning across various levels of government. Marape highlighted that a comprehensive government database is essential for providing a sound basis for planning at the national, provincial, and district levels. He noted that the census questionnaire contains six fundamental questions aimed at gathering specific knowledge about the population. As the National Statistics Office gathers demographic data, additional key information will be incorporated.
The Prime Minister stated the government’s commitment to gaining a thorough understanding of the country’s population, including the locations and activities of its citizens. This detailed information will be linked with other data attributes to enhance the overall data collection efforts. Marape appealed to the citizens to participate in the census, stressing the importance of registering individuals and linking this data with past experiences. He pointed out that the 2024 National Census will serve as a foundational update for understanding the population's characteristics now and in the future. “The National Census 2024 will be a foundational population update that we [the government] want to put our hands on to ensure we know our people, know the population, know the characteristics of our population from here, henceforth, and into the future,” stated Marape. He urged the public to take this national event seriously, emphasizing that it is not merely a government exercise for superficial purposes, but a crucial tool for planning the nation’s future effectively.
