PORT MORESBY (PNGfacts) – Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape has reinstated Ian Ling-Stuckey as Treasurer, following the recent defection of several Cabinet members to the Opposition. Alongside this key appointment, Marape plans to fill five other crucial portfolios in the coming week. "Ling-Stuckey has been moved back to Treasury with clear directions on a few key outcomes," Marape announced. "The directions are that Treasury focuses on ensuring fiscal and monetary policies work in tandem to address issues like foreign exchange, Kina value, key resource sector projects, debt elimination, and revenue prioritization over other recurrent activities." Prime Minister Marape has been acting as Treasurer since a Cabinet reshuffle in January when Ling-Stuckey was reassigned as Minister Assisting the Prime Minister on Treasury Matters. Earlier this month, Ling-Stuckey stepped in as Acting Finance Minister following Rainbo Paita's defection to the Opposition.
Expressing gratitude for Ling-Stuckey's support, Marape stated, "I thank Ling-Stuckey for his patience and the support he has shown over the past six months while assisting me with treasury matters. With Budget 2025 approaching and with clear instructions on his tasks, I am pleased to return the Treasury portfolio to him." In addition to this reappointment, Marape plans to appoint new ministers to fill the vacant portfolios in Housing, Energy, Finance, Tourism, and Higher Education next week. He emphasized the significance of all ministerial roles, stating, "All portfolios are being held at the moment, and no portfolio is lesser than another. I have delegated, tasked, and empowered ministers to do the job. Key Result Areas are known, so the expectation of performance is on all ministers and their respective departments." Marape reassured that the current acting ministers are managing the vacant portfolios until permanent appointments are made, ensuring continuity in governance and administrative functions.
