The situation in Papua New Guinea Milne Bay's Alotau town remains tense after the shooting death of a notorious criminal, Tommy Baker last Thursday. Baker was shot dead by police last Thursday night at Kwaini, just outside Alotau. NBC National News is reliably informed police remain on high alert since the fatal shooting. Reports of police confrontations with gang members have been happening throughout the New Year weekend. Police Commissioner, David Manning is yet to release an official statement on circumstances surrounding the shooting. Meanwhile, the two daily newspapers sold out in under 20 minutes when delivered to Alotau earlier with residents eager to read of the killing of Baker.
NBC News spoke with Post Courier paper seller, Simon Peter who says they only had 190, while the National sold over around 700 copies. The residents were left aghast at social media reports and the headlines of the daily newspapers, more so the uncensored photo of the dead criminal on the front page. Many said while they understood the gravity of his crimes, it was inhumane and insensitive on their part as truth-seekers and a message medium to have allowed this.
