The election petition matter filed against the Governor for Chimbu Noah Kool was dismissed by the National Court in Waigani .
The petition was filed by former Governor Michael Dua, challenging Mr. Kool's 2022 election win alleging errors and omissions during the counting process. It was dismissed after the Court upheld a Notice of Motion filed by Mr. Kool to dismiss the proceeding for non-compliance with a Court order of November 8th, 2022 by the petitioner. The Court order of November 8th, 2022 directed the petitioner to file and serve the affidavits that he intends to rely upon at trial, by November 22nd, 2022. ![]() Prime Minister James Marape is in Simbu to launch some major projects in the province. He arrives in the provincial capital Kundiawa this morning to a rousing welcome by the Simbu provincial government and the people of Simbu. Whilst in Kundiawa the prime minister will launch some major projects which include an incubation center for the Kundiawa district and a hydro project among others . ![]() The Papua New Guinea has appointed a panel of three independent experts to review the tax dispute between the Internal Revenue Commission and Barrick Niugini Limited. It comprises David Sode, former IRC Commissioner General, David Castiglione, a specialist in Resource taxation, and Ron Webb, a Queens Council who will work with a legal firm to review the legal analysis of the IRC’s position. In a statement, Prime Minister, James Marape says these are reputable individuals who have the skills and experiences to review independently what the IRC has done with this assessment. ![]() Miss PNG Josie Nicholas has been crowned Miss Pacific. The newly crowned queen Josie Nicholas says she will do her best to represent the region with respect for Pacific people and their cultures. The 24-year-old Miss Papua New Guinea was crowned Miss Pacific Islands in Samoa on Friday. She said she was overwhelmed and honoured to be crowned Miss Pacific Islands. She beat Miss Samoa Haylani Pearl Kuruppu, Miss American Samoa Kauhani Mea’alofa Teisa Fuimaono, Miss Nauru Alexandra Melody Pitcher and Miss Solomons Islands Tiare Haro to win the crown. ![]() The PNG Defence Force said it will deploy an appropriate force to deal with those responsible for ambushing members of the army on authorized task in Enga Province. Chief of Defence Force, Major General Mark Goina said this will be done in collaboration with the Royal PNG Constabulary and in accordance with the law. This follows this week's shooting of two soldiers on deployment by armed tribesmen of the notorious Akol tribe. The signing was initiated by Mama Bank CEO Gunanidhi Das and Member for Samarai- Murua and Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Isi Henry Leonard at the Mama Bank office in Waigani. Minister Isi Leonard says, his District Develooment Authorithy is committed to work with Mama Bank to establish the banks agency in his district and rollout the MSME Credit Scheme as well as enable the local people to have access to financial services and credit facility to support the district’s plan in empowering entrepreneurship. ![]() PNG Prime Minister and Tari-Port District Development Authority (DDA) Chairman James Marape presided over his district’s first DDA meeting for 2023 on Thursday (February 2, 2023). The meeting was held at Pangale Haus in Tari which is the Tari-Pori DDA office. At the meeting, PM Marape announced that each district in PNG had been allocated K10 million in District Services Improvement Programme (DSIP) with an additional K5 million for priority infrastructure. He urged his DDA Members to work on Tari-Pori District priorities. “We have a K15 million envelope so the DDA must approve clear priorities to be driven by Local Level Government (LLG) and District leadership in support to our Provincial Government and National Government focus areas,” PM Marape said. ![]() THE Papua New Guinea Opposition has urged the Government to immediately devalue the Kina by 20 per cent. Deputy Opposition leader Douglas Tomuriesa said the Kina’s exchange rate over the last 10 years had been “superficial and inappropriate for the country. “A 20 per cent devaluation of Kina will be good for the economy as it will immediately lead to an increase in the Kina value of exports including the Kina prices for the agricultural exports,” he said. “This will greatly stimulate increased production of all export crops such as coffee, cocoa, copra, palm oil, rubber, vanilla, and others.” Tomuriesa said, in addition, a devaluation of the Kina could: ![]() Police officers in Port Moresby who were patrolling the Badili area on Monday responded quickly and saved a woman's life, when she was savagely beaten by a man. Members of the Constabulary who attended this crime said the victim from Goilala and the assailant from Western Highlands Province argued over a market spot, before the man struck the woman with a piece of timber. They were selling their bettlelnut at the location but fled when the NCDC Urban Safety Units arrived. When the NCDC officers left, they returned and began arguing over a market space. ![]() There is an authority and a protocol when naming roads in Papua New Guinea. The PNG Department of Works and Highways has released the following statement. /// IN light of a recent controversy regarding a public road that the past attempts by individuals or organizations to name public roads without the proper consultations, endorsements and approvals, the Department of Works and Highways (DoWH) wishes to clarify the Law and procedure for the naming of public roads. The Road (Management and Fund) Act 2020 (the Act), clearly states in section 7 (Declaration of Public Roads) Subsection (7), that: “A road authority with responsibility for a public road, may by way of a notice published in the National Gazette with public consultation period of 28 days to name or change the name of a public road.” |
