POLICE in PNG are now planning security operations for the 2022 general election because of threats of violent criminal activities in peaceful provinces and the Covid-19, says acting Deputy Police Commissioner (DCP) operations Donald Yamasombi. “We are concerned about traditionally peaceful provinces like Milne Bay and Madang, which are experiencing extreme violent criminal activities. We are also concerned about the Highlands, which traditionally is always the hotspot for security planning,” he said. “Police are factoring in health workers such as from the St John Ambulance Service to deal with the Covid-19.”
DCP Yamasombi said everything would depend on Government funding. “Our plans will only be successful if the Government provides the required funds as soon as possible as elections are less than 10 months away,” he said. The electoral roll update is planned for next month. The election date is yet to be confirmed. The Electoral Commission is awaiting a response to the letter sent to Government House on the dates. “We need the dates and also funding to plan now to collect intelligence to properly plan our operations,” DCP Yamasombi said. “We need to analyse security threats and resources in all provinces. “Time is of the essence.” DCP Yamasombi said he was happy with the turnout of committee members at their second meeting at the Police Operation Centre in Port Moresby last Thursday. It was attended by officers from the police force, military, Correctional Services and the Electoral Commission. “The committee is concerned about preparing logistics such as procuring vehicles, helicopters and boats to be used for the transportation of ballot boxes, polling and security personnel to polling areas,” he said Statement/TheNational/PNGfacts Next : PNG Cop Accused Of Killing Betel Nut Vendor Granted Bail Comments are closed.
