Chief of PNG Defence Force, Major General Gilbert Toropo has appealed to individuals spreading fabricated information about him to stop after the Waigani National Court stayed his revocation. Online rumours claimed police had called in Mr. Toropo for an interview yesterday over allegations of misappropriation and money laundering of PNGDF Commercial Support Program Trust Funds. By: Minister for Treasury “I am very disappointed in a recent statement from Isaac Lupari concerning actions to modernise and strengthen one of PNG’s most important institutions. His claims are simply incorrect. He has also created a serious breach of trust by claiming Governors Bird and Juffa support his arguments. This is just a lie. Lupari has obviously spent too much time too close to his former boss and learnt bad habits about the truth.Like his former boss, he now lies through his teeth” stated the Treasurer, Ian Ling-Stuckey. A few facts: Former Chief Secretary to Papua New Guinea Government, Ambassador Isaac Lupari CBE, called on the Government to immediately re-think and repeal amendments made to the Central Bank Act. “It is a big Mistake - and dangerous”. The amendments, which passed in the last session of Parliament will significantly erode the independence of the Bank, hence leading to politicization and destabilization. “Rather than moving to a more “collegiate style of decision making”, as claimed by the Treasurer, the amendments erode the independence of the Bank, and in doing so put at risk the financial future and international reputation of our nation”, Mr. Lupari said. The Papua New Guinea Independent Consumer and Competition Commission (ICCC) will increase BUS and taxi fares for this year (2022) and the operators are happy with the decision According to the ICCC commissioner chief executive officer Paulus Ain, the increases were based on the increase in the Consumer Price Index in the 12 months to September, 2021 and the increase in retail prices for diesel this year. Foreign CRIMINALS or offenders from other countries such as Indonesia are often freed because Papua New Guinea police do not have funds to process or cater for them, says Assistant Commissioner Police (ACP) border command Peter Philip.
“Funding is an ongoing issue and a major challenge for the police force that needs to be addressed,” he said. ACP Philip said most of the police operations under his division dealt with international offenders but they would go set free due to lack of funding. The Papua New Guinea Marape-Basil Government as sacked Bank of Papua New Guinea Governor Loi Bakani and has appointed Benny Popoitai as the acting governor of the Bank of PNG, replacing Loi Bakani who has been accused of refusing to cooperate with the bank’s review process. Papua New Guinea's Treasurer Ian Ling-Stuckey said the changes to the Central Banking Act passed by Parliament this month “are the result of a comprehensive consultation process involving key firms and institutions in PNG, central banks in the region, and the IMF”. Papua New Guinea's wanted notorious criminal Tommy Baker was shot dead by Police last night in Alotau ,Milne Bay Province. Police Commissioner David Manning has confirmed this to the media this morning he was verbally informed of the shooting. However he said he is yet to get a full report from police in Alotau and will release an official statement later today. Good morning to you on the last day of 2021 2021 will go down in our history as one of our darkest. I feel I owe the nation an apology. I acted in good faith to humbly resign in May 2019 thinking that the change that was asked for would be youthful and move us forward faster than my government could. I have, like you, been bitterly disappointed in the performance of the Marape led Government over the last 31 months. I am sorry to have not fully understood the cargo cult mentality; lack of common sense and absence of integrity that now identifies the Marape Government. I have been surprised at how fast they have managed to undo years of hard work of not just my government, but those that came before me. Economically we are in one heck of a mess with debt at over K51 billion and no plan to increase income except to tax our people more. Socially, crime and violence in our capital and the regions is out of control. The law is routinely abused and manipulated for political gain. |
